Nanuq

Background

The Nanuq is a 60 ft aluminium sailing boat, designed by Peter Gallinelli, also the architect of the Imram on which a number of YCC members have sailed (and obtained their Permis Mer !).

The boat is similar to the Zero which was launched in 2009 and which has since sailed to Norway. Contrary to the Zero, the Nanuq will have its living quarters made of polystyrene, fibreglass and epoxy.

The part of the YCC

The idea is to build this composite part during the summer of 2010, in the BA5 hall which is used in the winter to store the YCC boats. Members of the YCC can thus take part in the construction of a real boat and acquire experience in the use of epoxy and fibreglass.

The project has been endorsed by the YCC committee on July 7th. The CERN Staff Association forwarded the plan to the DSO for BA5 on July 9th. BA5 was up for its tri-annual inspection on July 20th. Although not in any way related to Nanuq, the inspection provided an excellent opportunity to discuss the project with the DSO and members of the HSE unit. The building has since been remeasured and reclassified. The HSE group helped us in the week of August 2nd to complete a "chemical risk assessment" and a produced a Safety Requirements and Safety File. Following this, a first "Start of Work Notice (AOC)" has been submitted on our behalf. This was fully approved on August 9th, pronounced void, augmented, resubmitted and again fully approved on August 19th.
